In my city there is tradition for meeting in a huge park in the middle of town, where there will be parades, music and basically just a lot of people enjoying life. Which is nice. I love that concept.
However in this park, people tend to drink alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Which is perfectly fine and I don't have any problem with it, I think it is great idea to add some extra fun and joy to the whole thing.
But today I realised how little of the true traditions that actually are shown in a lot of the holidays today. It's all about alcohol nowadays. I don't know if it's just Denmark, because we are famous for drinking quite a lot of alcohol, or if it is the case all over the world.
Lets take a look at this day for example. 1th of May. People go to the park for different reasons, but it all adds up to the very same thing: They want to blow their minds out
Reason 1: It is international Workers' Day which, obviously, means it is socialists, communists and all those people who are gathered in this park in my town. Which is very clear by the tons of red flags and people screaming about how the government sucks donkeyballs.
Reason 2: Since it is the 1th of May we are on the edge of summer. Spring is all around us and spring is the time of love and happiness and that should be celebrated.
Reason 3: They go to the park, because their friends do, and they don't really have a clue what the frick it's all about.
But thinking about it... all these reasons are just a cover up for them wanting to get pissed.
"Hell yeah! I'M WASTED AS HELL! But it's okay because it's labour day!" wtf?!
and this happens so often - Christmas, Easter, Halloween, the start of the big vacation. Just every little event can be turned into an excuse to drink alcohol. That is just stupid.
I know that of course it isn't everybody, who are drinking alcohol like it's their last day on this earth, but what I am saying is, that it is the vast majority. And this majority tends to do the same thing at every occasion they can find. And that kind of drives me insane.
*sigh*
I guess there isn't really anything I can about it. Just gotta accept the Danes' drinking habits as it is, because I'm not counting on them to change.
Sorry for ranting. I do love the International Workers' Day and I love hanging out in the park with all my friends and enjoying the summer ^^
